Review of Douglas City Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Review of Douglas City Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

This campground is tucked down in a narrow valley along a stretch of the main Trinity River.  Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Oaks and Madrone trees root on the walls of the canyon.  You can walk right out from your site to the Trinity River for some of the best fly fishing (salmon and steelhead mid-August through winter) in the state.

The camp has a paved road and paved parking spurs.  The sites themselves are small but they feel private because of the amount of growth between.  Site #23 is the only site that doesn't provide shade from the hot summer sun.  Super bonus features of this campground are the hot showers and the clean flush toilet bathrooms.

What to Bring:

  • Fly fishing pole
  • Bucket (for blackberries)
  • Kayak/canoe
  • Raft
  • Hiking shoes

In the Reviews:

4.3/5 stars.  The only thing that set this campground down from a 5/5-star rating were the reviewers that encountered theft and "transient campers."  When I looked at these reviews, they occurred through multiple years and at different times of the summer.  Most reviewers love the beauty of this area, the multitude of activities, hot showers and very clean bathrooms.  Eisenga at campgroundsreviews.com states that this is "California's hidden gem.  (It has) ample level sites.  Silence, birds, river and mountain view add up to a lasting positive experience.  The host was second to none and very helpful.  We camped here for three days in a 27' motorhome and will surely come back sometime."

Activities:

  • Fly fishing
  • Hiking
  • Paddling (waters below Pigeon Point rage at class III-IV for white water enthusiasts)
  • Gold panning
  • Painted Rock for a day of swimming
  • Half-day trip to Weaverville
