Review of Hirz Bay Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Review of Hirz Bay Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

This campground is on a point at the entrance to Hirz Bay.  The campsites are all shaded well by a forest of pine, oak and madrone trees.  The size of each campsite drastically varies though.

Make sure to check out the 360 photos of the camp before reserving.  Some sites have plenty of room for 2 double tents or an 8-person tent while others have no room for any tent set up (intended only for trailers or RV's).  They don't identify the difference of these campsites on the main website either.  I think it would be an unfortunate camping experience if you intended to tent camp and found that there was no space for a tent.

All of the sites (save two) have paved parking pads with plenty of room for whatever RV, trailer or glamping mobile you have.  The sites also have a flat paved fire pit which will allow you to sit in your folding chair without fear that it'll flip over backward.

At the bottom of the camp is the main boat launch for this arm of the lake.  Shasta Lake is one of my favorite boating lakes.  Next to hiking, it's the most popular activity here.

In the Reviews:

Overall rating of 3.5/5 according to Yelp.  The negative reviews state irritation with the lack of a campsite host and the resulting late-night partying.  There is no firewood available at the camp for purchase the campsites are not raked or swept in between campers.

One camper, JoNeal H., warned about "the red clay dirt that stains everything."  Positive reviewers enjoyed the proximity of the boat launch and the beach which was ideal for kids.

Activities:

  • Boating
  • Fishing (trolling for trout is good in this area)

Favorite Sites:

  • 34, 37, 29, 25, 20
