Review of McCloud Bridge Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Review of McCloud Bridge Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

This campground is located at the north end of the McCloud arm of Shasta Lake.  The entrance is about 600 feet from the McCloud Bridge.  Although it takes a bit longer to get out to, the intimacy of the camp is well worth the trip.

Each of the sites at the campground overlooks the lake.  Some have a partial view while others are lake-front.  All of the sites are shaded well by large oak trees.  The road and parking spurs are paved with pavers on the interior of the sites for the site amenities.

Each campsite is moderately large, fitting at least one large 8-person tent or a few 2-person tents comfortably.  Privacy rating is moderate; you'll be able to see the tents of a few neighbors but not necessarily hear them.

When we went in May, the water at this end of the lake was high, allowing for ample exploration of the McCloud Arm on your raft, canoe or kayak.  The water level drops considerably later in the year, taking on the appearance of the McCloud River that supplies the Arm.  Activities become river play.

The fall is a great time to come out here for the fishing.  Tom Steinstra notes that "large brown trout migrate through this section of the lake en route to their upstream spawning grounds," in his California Camping book.  One of the camp hosts informed us that in September, mushroom hunters enjoy this area for the Matsutake Mushroom harvesting.

In the reviews:

4,4/5 on Google reviews.  Camping guru, Tom Steinstra states, "this campground is popular because the best shore-fishing access at the lake is available at nearby McCloud Bridge.  It is common to see 15 or 20 people shore fishing here for trout on summer weekends."

Negative reviewers identified that the bathrooms were neglected, the canyon could get windy and rattlesnakes were active in the summer.  Positive reviewers loved the quiet of the camp.  They enjoyed the diversity of foliage as this camp is situated on old farmland.
